Phil Hill 1927-2008

We lost one of the American legends. Hill won the Formula One title for Ferrari in 1961. He also was the first American to win the 24-hour endurance sports-car race at Le Mans, France -- a race he would win twice again -- and he won the Sebring 12-hour race three times, among many other victories.

I was very sorry to read about his passing. As a young man I watched him race at Riverside and other tracks. He was a smooth driver with a distinctive style. I never met him but I did stand beside him in a garage once. Of course I didn't speak to him. Mere mortals didn't speak to gods. R.I.P.
