Two Suzuki's lead the way in Valencia's 1st Qualifying
Two Suzuki GSX-R1000 machines headed the field in the opening qualifying session for the Spanish WSBK Round at Valencia, but it was German Max Neukirchner with a time of 1m34.806s and his Japanese team-mate Yukio Kagayama, rather than Fonsi Nieto, who were up at the front. The Alstare duo were the only riders to dip under the 1m35s mark. Nieto, currently lying second in the championship, was surprisingly down in sixteenth position after struggling with rear tyre grip.

I feel terrible for Neukirchner.

I've only recently gotten into Superbike racing and I have to say that I'm quite impressed by the quality of the racing. I see myself as more of a car racing guy than motorcycle racing guy but I'm glad that I have gotten into this. Can you give me a little synopsis of some of the main contenders?

WSBK (World Superbike) or now just SBK is kind of a strange critter to get a handle on and I'm not really well enough versed in the subject to provide a thorough summary.

In several cases, SBK is a stepping stone up to MotoGP and in others, where MotoGP riders step down to. For example, previous SBK champ, James Toseland, is a first year MotoGP rider on the Yamaha satellite team, Tech 3. Colin Edwards & Chris Vermuelin also stepped up to the GP level from SBK. Conversely, SBK riders Max Biaggi, Carlos Checa, R. Rolfo, R. Xaus & M. Tamada have all spent time at the MotoGP level.

I'll dig up and post more a little later today when I have more time or if someone else can chime in, please do.
