The solar flare of 1859 was a strong flare that burned out our telegraph systems - set telegraph offices on fire and caused havoc with our compasses. The entire world watched as the sky burst into colorful dancing light as the aura from the flares engulfed the world. The world was not sure what caused this event at the time.
