Road America To Host Nation's Fastest Motorcycle Racers June 6-8
Road America News release

The AMA Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader returns to Road America, June 5- 8, 2008, to headline a huge weekend of motorcycle racing. Launched in 1976, with roots going back another 52 years, the AMA Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited is America's premier road-race series. In three decades of competition, it has become the world's most prestigious and successful national stage for production-based motorcycle competition and proudly boasts 15 U.S. racers who went on to win a combined 30 world championships.

This year's 11-event, coast-to-coast series features four distinct classes: two for highly modified street bikes-Superbike and Formula Xtreme-and two for near-production versions of these machines- Supersport and Superstock. A combination of rider skill and changing technology pushes the limits each year, with constantly improving results. Record-breaking speeds are reached at Road America: the 4.048-mile, 14-turn track provides the fastest average lap times on the AMA Superbike Championship circuit.

En route to victory in 2006, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Mat Mladin and his GSX-R1000 set a record-breaking, 2:11.90 sec., 110.34 mph run. Current Superbike point leaders include 2007 Champion Ben Spies, Mat Mladin and Neil Hodgson.

The SunTrust Moto-ST Series (emphasis mine) and the AMA Red Bull U.S. Rookies Cup Series will also enhance the action-packed schedule. Moto-ST Series takes to the track in a three-hour, team enduro format. With its large field, and dynamic rider changes and pit stops, this series offers spectators a uniquely intense form of cycle competition. Emerging talent is featured in the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup Series in which young riders, between ages 13 and 16, compete using identical bikes so that no talent is overlooked due to a lack of financial resources or professional backing.

CAN SPIES BREAK THE RECORD FOR 7 WINS IN A ROW?

Everybody pretty much knows what to expect. Will the Yamaha's bounce back in Supersport and will Benny win them all as he says? Will Spies break the record with 7 wins in a row? Tune in Sunday to find out (or read Superbikeplanet like we do!)

Heh, I had no idea there was a national this weekend! Wow, 2 of the best racetracks in the country 1 week apart.

I pick a Suzuki to win.

It is looking like weather for the weekend is going to be wet. This could throw an interesting spanner in the works. :ack2:

Results of Friday superbike qualifying, whatever exactly that is? :) Spies a full second faster than anybody else and Jamie Hacking ahead of Mladin! It is really a shame Rog is not healthy as it looks like the ZX-10R is starting to come around.

DuHamel shows up this time but DiSalvo sucking down around 10th

Catching up on the action from Road America...it sounds like a crazy day. Rain, lightning, red flags and a rumor going around that Suzuki will withdraw from racing in the US next season.

Spies crashed hard in qualifying but went out on his backup bike and still took the spot. He won the race going away and it's time to go ahead and give him the title again. Mladin said he had nothing for him. I didnt' see anything about it at Soup, but this should give Spies his seven wins in a row and the new record?

Hacking on the podium again with the Kawi but not a peep about the condition of Roger or Tommy Hayden. Weird.

A day (or 3) late and a few bucks short in keeping the AMA action updated. In race 2, Mladin won, Spies took 2nd and Hacking again on the box with the Kwacker. Steve Rapp won but was DQ's for an illegally cut tire giving the win to BBoz.

Same ol', same ol'. I should be enjoying this last year of AMA racing as we know it but knowing what's to come, it all has kind of a lame duck feel to it. Not that there weren't some changes needed to improve the series but throwing the baby out with the bath water just seems too extreme.

With all the rumors of Suzuki pulling out, even if only one of the other three did the same thing, it would likely be the end of it.

With a break in the action until the combined round at Laguna Seca in July, I do hope Spies gets a taste of MotoGP at Donington. If he is as unprepared and ill equipped to ride a GP bike as some think, it does seem at least, that his options are open (or more open?) in WSBK.

Anyway, didn't mean to drop the ball on the weekend race thread. I figured everybody that cared already knew what happened anyway and my spidey sense tells me that people are kind of blah on the whole thing?

I couldn't agree more - I'm not a huge AMA fan but I'm finding it difficult to maintain interest at this point. SBK is actually looking slightly interesting, and I'm normally no SBK fan.
